MFP Solutions Top Ten Copier & MFP Blogs for April 2013

Last month I posted "MPF Solutions Top Ten Copier and MFP Blogs for March 2013 and I made a mental note of one particular Blog I wrote titled 10 Awesome Tips for a Great MFP/Copier Demo.

I wrote this Blog in August of 2012, last month there were 856 reads, this month increased to 956 reads for the month.  Total reads since August now stands at a little over 9,000 reads!!! All I can say is thank you. I did post a follow up Demo Blog titled The "Art" of the Copier & MFP Demo which I thought was better, but who am I to argue with over 9,000 reads. Thank you!!!

Memjet, Preton Saver Offering New MFP & MPS Solutions

A couple of months ago I wrote a blog about Memjet's new C6010 ink color printer with their waterfall ink head technology.  The Memjet C6010 color printer's claim to fame is an out put speed of 60 pages per minute with full bleed for letter size paper, the ability for the dealer to control the aftermarket for the ink and the excellent margins on that are available for the ink and the hardware.

I had the chance to speak with Kim Beswick with Memjet the other day.  Kim spoke about the dealers ability to control your ink supplies. The dealer(s) would be able to buy new or send used cartridges to Parts Now for a refill @ a 30% discount.  Dealers also would be able to refill their own cartridges @ a 50% discount and Memjet would supply the dealers with a free refill systems. Dealers would be able to buy ink in one liter bags.

Control is good, especially with aftermarket supplies. One of the points I outlined in the previous Memjet blog was the thought that wouldn't it be awesome if the Memjet C6010 had technology to allow dealers to bill the end users for the amount of ink that they used.  This would be similar to Xerox's tiered billing or Kyotier billing. Having this type of billing system would allow dealers to bill for just black, and tiered cost per page billing for the amount of color ink that was used. At the time when I wrote the blog there was no such technology available until......

Who's Afraid of Memjet "Follow Up" Q & A

Last week I posted Who's Afraid of Memjet "Part Duex". I was able to see a demonstration of the of the mew Memjet C6010 printer at the BTA Winter Break in Orlando.  I had a few questions about the product and pricing but was not able to secure that information while I was at the show.

In the mean time I sent an email to Kim Beswick of Memjet with those questions in hand.

Hi Art – here are quick answers to your questions – I’m in meetings all day tomorrow but will do my best to respond quickly if you have others.

Best,

Kim

what was the MSRP again and the estimated cost per page?

The MSRP for the C6010 printer is $1299.  We are only distributing through select MPS/dealers – so this price is a bit of a list price that very few buyers will have access to.  We expect the device to be sold typically below the MSRP.

CPP is difficult to estimate.  I know this is going to sound a bit crazy but I expect Color CPP’s to be between 3-10c and black to be 1.5-2c.  We have variable pricing to dealers for ink tanks based on whether the ink tank is brand new, refilled with new ink via an authorized centralized process, refilled with new ink by the dealer themselves (again via an authorized process).

The combination of variable pricing and different pricing strategies at the dealer level, and the fact that we are not overly distributed, will together create a lot of variety in terms of Color CPP (i.e. street prices quoted to customers).  We don’t have  public Memjet.com reference price for ink, nor are we selling through big box stores or national online outlets like CDW.  So dealers can price low (i.e. to win an aggressive bid, or shift less profitable monochrome pages to color) or they can price for the margin % or $’s they need, or they can price at the same price as the A3 click charge (all in) or ???

All in all more color pages = more profit to dealers.  We are excited about that.

Also do you have software that will do a tiered billing process like the Xerox colorqube or the new kyocera devices.

Not yet.  This is an area of interest and exploration right now.  In the end we likely won’t have a pricing program like Xerox.  But what we want to do is track different types of pages – and give the dealers the data to manage an account in the same way – based on different prices for different types of pages.

Thanks Art –

Who's Afraid of Memjet "Part Duex"

This past weekend I was at the BTA Winter Break in Orlando.  While the education sessions are awesome I especially enjoy meeting with the 30 plus vendors being able to see what's new and different.

Back in June of 2009 I penned "Who's Afraid of Memjet".  Last year there were major announcements from Drupa from the likes of Toshiba, Fuji/Xerox, and Canon/Oce that all of them had purchased a license to incorporate the Memjets Waterfall print head technology. Toshiba to use it in MFP's, Canon/Oce developed a device called "Project Velocity" for an Oce branded wide format and then Fuji/Xerox will integrate the Memjet Water print head technology for wide format also. It was interesting that one of the comments on the blog was "this can't be good news for KIP".

While at the BTA Winter Break event I was able see the new Memjet C6010 printer.  What I saw was stunning, amazing and a marvel of color ink technology.  Sixty pages per minute, or 1 page per second of 100% coverage on letter size paper (this puppy can also print legal) with full bleed!! As soon as the print exited the printer the ink was dry, no jams, no bands in the color.  I saw prints that were done with coated inkjet paper (stunning) and also bond paper (typical matt type image).  I was more impressed though with the high capacity ink, black will hold 100ml, while the CMY will hold 50ml each.  Base on "normal office printing" the black ink will yield 4,600 pages, cyan is good for 7,500 pages, yellow cranks in at 5,050 pages and magenta trails with 4,830 pages.

I did ask the retail price on this system, however I forgot (arrgghh), but I was told that we'll see a memjet MFP in the 2nd quarter of this year.  Cost per page, and ink is the life blood of profit for Dealers and Memjet was keen to inform me that the ink tanks are designed for authorized refill.

WTF, Memjet Partners with Fuji/Xerox, Canon/Oce & Toshiba

I was surprised to say the least!  While reading through the Drupa Press Releases (for those who don't know, DRUPA is the worlds largest print & imaging show. It's held once every four years in beautiful Dusseldorf, Germany.  I like to call it the Olympics of Print & Imaging) I read that Fuji/Xerox, Canon/Oce and Toshiba have partnered with Memjet to produce wide format systems that will incorporate Memjets Waterfall print head.

Fuji Xerox will integrate Memjets Waterfall printhead into a 42 inch roll feed wide format system for printing technical and production graphics.  Up to 1600x1600 dpi resolution. 1600x1600 will print at 150mm per second and lower resolution will print at 300mm per second.  What!  mm per second?  WTF is that?  A quick conversion will tell us that 25.4 mm equals one inch. Dang at 300mm per second you'll get full color output at 11.8 inches per second!  Thats' fast! The video on the left is the Fiji/Xerox unit at Drupa  Awesome!
Not to be outdone, Toshiba has also partnered with Memjet.  Here's a snippet from the Press Release:

Under the partnership, Toshiba TEC Corporation will initially work to integrate Memjet components into a Multi-Function Peripheral (MFP) product targeted for the office market. The MFP will feature a scanner, photocopier and color printer that produces high-quality color pages at 60 pages per minute, thanks to Memjet's revolutionary page-wide print head, controller chip, software and ink. A future MFP product co-developed by both companies is being exhibited at drupa, the world's largest print industry event in Dusseldorf, Germany, in the Memjet booth, Hall 5, E28.

So, while Fuji/Xerox and Canon/Oce are focusing their efforts on wide format, Toshiba will concentrate with incorporating the technology with MFP's.  I haven't heard of anyone writing about or seeing the "future" MFP at Drupa yet.  Wish I was there, maybe in four years, right?

Now Canon/Oce has developed a device called "Project Velocity" and it seems this will be an Oce wide format system that will also use the Memjet Waterfall print head.  In a recent press release it was stated that there would be a working wide format system on preview at Drupa for printing maps and posters at a speed of 500AO format sheets. I'm not even going to look that up. It's fast!  This system is reported to house six rolls of paper.

I've been following Memjet and Silverbrook Technologies for sometime.  Recently some of their print heads have shown up in print devices that were more the size of an A4 printer.  I've only seen one and all I can say is that the user was excited about the speed but..... let me put it this way there was an issue with the color.  However, with partnering with the like of Xerox, Canon and Toshiba and the possibility of having color matching rips, I'm thinking the sky is not the limit any more for Memjet.

Could RISO Corp be For Sale?

News came in an email to me that RISO just laid off David Murphy (VP Marketing), Don Michelucci (VP, Direct) and others in the Direct Division. I was told it was a reduction in workforce.

Just today, I heard another Rumor that RISO has closed all of their technology portals and techs were now running Direct Branches! The later with the technology portals and the Direct branches comes from a reliable source, but ya never know.

Personally, I think the new ComColor is an awesome box and has a place in todays market and I also believe that this is the printing technology of the future.

Does RISO have the financing and the clout to succeed and bring future models to market, such as a 50, 60 or 70ppm device? I'm no expert, but what I can tell you is that I've probably sold 4 duplicators over the past 2 years, compared to selling at least 10 or per year in the past. The furture is not in the Digital Duplicator! On the other hand how many companies can afford to dole out $50,000 for a ComColor, seems to me its a pretty hefty price to pay for "News Color".

If RISO was bought by the likes of Canon, Ricoh, KonicaMinolta or Xerox, I'm sure they could get the manufacturing costs down and make the ComColor more affordable. I beleive the street price of the systems need to be in the $25,000 range. It's all about the ink, it's the consumables that carry the day and keeps the profits flowing. right?

Another note is that RISO had bought back some of thier stock in June of 08. So, what's RISO to do?

With Memjet on the horizon of commericalizing it's first generation of print componets can the likes of Xerox, Ricoh, KonicaMinolta and Canon can take a wait and see approach or do they need to make a move and buy RISO?

Re-Birth of the HP Edgeline??

Picked this up the other day from a member on the Print4Pay Hotel. Seems Memjet is still hard at work and they may have a partner!

Remember the hype about the HP Edgeline? Well, the Edgeline flopped, rumors stated that the entire Edgeline team was laid off and future support and R & D was moved to Singapore.

Here's what a P4P member posted on the forums:

Memjet, which is working to develop a color inkjet MFP, is rumored to be working with Hewlett Packard. (would this technology replace the Edgeline?) Potential launch of new high speed product in 2011.

Memjet "Who's Afraid of Memjet?"

I've been watching Memjet for awhile now, I was alerted the other day by a Print4Pay Hotel member that they've launched a new web site (memjet)

When you arrive at the main page, you'll see three different types of systems and it's agreed that all three look like mfp's (multi functional products), however each picture appears to be an artists rendering. So, I'm thinking do they really have mfp's at this point in time?

While on the site you can also take a trip the Memjet Comparison Video page, from this page you can see how your favorite printer or mfp stacks up to the speed of the memjet printer. I'll say the speed is impressive, however if you listen closely it seems that the Memjet seems to be quite noisy, plus the fact that they are only showing a printer making prints and no mfp. There have been some naysayers that have stated "In the video, there's no power cord or data cord, can this really be true?", when looking at the videos there are no data or power cords for the competitive models either. I'll leave this up to the masses to figure out. What's truly amazing is the speed!

You may ask, who is Memjet or what is a Memjet? Silverbrook Research started in 1994, near Sydney, Australia. The inventor is Kia Silverbrook and Silverbrook holds over 2,500 patents. Currently Silverbrook employees over 500 scientists, engineers and support staff that are working on Memjet on other technologies.

I've heard from the street, that they were looking to sell the technology at first and then when there were no takers, they decided to develop the systems themselves, again this is what I heard on the street and may or may not be true. Here's what I do know, at this point in time they are looking for Partners such as OEM Brand Partners, Product Distribution and Channel Partners, Electronic Manufacturing Partners, Printing Suppliers and Developers, Ink Developers and Manufacturers, Paper Developers and Manufacturers, Supplies Distribution and Channel (Refill) Partners. I also took a trip to their job opportunities page and was hoping to see if they were doing any type of sales hiring. There were no sales jobs posted and if there was I would have jumped on it like a Koala Bear on eucalyptus leaves.

To learn more about these partnerships you can take a trip here to Memjet's Value Chain. Reaching back thru the many years of memory, it kinda reminds me of Chester Carlson, his invention took almost ten years to peddle and then another 11years for that product to finally become commercially available as a "Xerox" Copy machine. Do, I think Memjet will take almost 21 years to hit the market, where you can buy one at Staples, Office Max or you local Memjet Dealer? Heck, it's been 15 years in the making right now and it seems closer than ever to become a part of the mainstream for office machines.

Can anyone say Disruptive Technology? I for one think that this technology is bigger than HP Edgeline, and Xerox ColorQube combined. We'll have to wait a little longer to see how this develops.

Ink Printing "Memjet" Awesome Speeds

Memjet, I've seen the videos and they are awesome, from the information below it seems Memjet will only make the componets for another manufacturer. At this time there is no info on what manufacturer will hold the keys to kingdom.

My thinking is Epson, Canon or HP, or maybe all three, we'll have to see. You've got to check out the video. It's AWESOME!

- More details on Memjet Technology, the company that promised to revolutionize the industry with a low cost, high speed color inkjet system:
o was invented by Kia Silverbrook of Australia
o Company is backed by two wealthy investors:
 Ray Stata, cofounder and chairman of Analog Devices, a $2.5 billion Massachusetts-based semiconductor company
 George Kaiser, the twentieth-richest American, a Oklahoma oil, gas and banking mogul with assets of $12 billion
o First product will ship in late 2009
o Prototype shown to industry reporters offered:
o 60ppm top speed for low quality mode (1600x800dpi)
o 30ppm top speed for high quality mode (1600x1600dpi)
o Uses five rows of page wide inkjet printhead arrays
o Possible selling price of $499
o 2300 patents issued so far, with 2000 pending
o Plan is to sell low cost replacement ink rather than expensive cartridges, as inkjet heads have long life
o Memjet will make components only, and its OEM partners will actually make and market the printers (the identity of the electronics makers that will market Memjet is still being kept secret)

MFP Industry News

Thought I would share this with everone, I did not write it, and I'm not sure who does, however I tip my hat, its a fine compilation of the industry for the week!

The following is a quick review of copier/MFP industry news from industry publications.

Finally succumbing to pressure from Warren Lichtenstein, IKON decided to sell out to Ricoh of Japan.

Details:

  • Warren Lichtenstein runs Steel Partners II, a powerful group which controlled a large quantity of IKON stock, which has been demanding action from IKON CEO, Matt Espe.

  • Mr. Lichtenstein, in June of last year, requested that either IKON buy back its stock for just over $17 per share, or that it sell the company for that amount.

  • Mr. Espe initially starting buying back shares at $15, but then ended the program early due to market conditions.

  • Steel Partners II owned 12,456,300 shares, and will now realize a $84 million gain on their 4 year investment.

  • Purchase price of $1.62 billion or $17.25 per share.

  • Stock was trading at $15.56 on 8/27/08.

  • For now, Ricoh will allow IKON to run as a separate subsidiary, with IKON headquarters remaining in Malvern, Pennsylvaniao According to industry analysts, Canon moves anywhere from 40-60% of its products through IKON in U.S., Canada & Europe. Combined with loss of distribution through DANKA and Global, Canon’s stock is taking a beating.

  • Canon reported its net profit was down 13% (Canon is still three times larger than Ricoh in total revenue), IKON also sold Hewlett Packard & Kyocera products.

  • Canon has yet to comment publicly but it does have $4.1 billion worth of treasury stock it could spend on acquisitions.

  • According to some industry analysts, Canon may consider allowing Hewlett Packard to relabel its entire product line to make up for lost IKON sales. This would mean trying to sell large MFPs primarily through computer dealer/VARs.· Currently, the largest Canon product that HP is allowed to relabel is a 40ppm color model (HP Color LaserJet 6040mfp)

  • Ricoh claims that 30% of its product was sold through IKON.

  • Ricoh CFO, Zenji Miura, was quoted as stating that Ricoh plans on “replacing all the Canon product in the IKON channel in next 3 to 4 years”, as IKON will obviously focus on selling Ricoh product.

  • Ricoh CEO, Shiro Kondo stated: “purpose was to strengthen the sales force in North American market as IKON counts many of the Fortune 500 companies as its customers” “we do not expect that IKON will turn a profit soon after it becomes part of the Ricoh Group”, “for the future, we want to double IKON’s operating profit posted in September 2007 to achieve an operating margin of 10%”,“we will consolidate the back-offices”, “if it becomes clear in the future that it is more rational to integrate the sales and service networks of IKON and Ricoh Business Solutions, we will do that”

  • Ricoh is reportedly going to borrow money to finance the acquisition.

  • Ricoh has $22 billion in revenue and 83,400 employees.

  • IKON currently has over 400 locations and over 25,000 employees, with total revenue last year of $4 billion. Over 10,000 of the employees are technicians.

  • IKON, whose original name was Alco Standard, was created by the acquisition of 450 independent dealers, starting in the 1980s.

  • Alco Standard was started by Tinkham Veale, a wealthy Cleveland investor, who purchased dozens of firms including fertilizer, machinery, electronics, coal and ice cream makers.

  • In 1984, the company sold most of these companies off, and focused on copier dealers and paper makers.

  • In 1997, Alco spun off paper division as Unisource Worldwide, and renamed itself IKON.

  • IKON stood for “I Know One Name” as the company hoped to provide copiers, printers and computer networks. Later, the computer network division was sold off. (pundits say IKON stands for “I know only numbers”)

MORE ON RICOH BUYING IKON

  • IKON’s headquarters in Malvern, PA employs 500.

  • Former CEO was John Stuart, who came to IKON from Ricoh in 1985, but left when growth plans did not meet target.

  • Current CEO, Matt Espe, came to IKON 6 years ago from General Electric, where he ran the lightbulb division.

  • In a letter to IKON employees, Matt Espe explained the reasons for the sale:· “We decided that, like many of our competitors, we would be better able to achieve these goals as part of a larger organization that was able to offer a full range of end-to-end office solutions and services to more customers across the globe”

  • Law firm Levi & Korsinsky, LLP announced it has launched an investigation into this acquisition of IKON, due to shareholder concerns.

  • In January, IKON dumped 350 employees to cut costs after profit fell 45%§ Sales fell for 11 straight periods prior to sale.

  • IKON is being advised by Goldman, Sachs & Co., while Ricoh is advised by Morgan Stanley.

  • The acquisition must meet approval of U.S. and European antitrust legislation.

  • Standard & Poor and Moody investor services are considering downgrading the lending status of Ricoh, as the company now has 111 billion yen of debt maturing in 2011.

  • Ricoh is offering retention bonuses to top IKON execs:

  • Matt Espe, CEO may receive up to $8,630,400.

  • Robert Woods, CRO, up to $2,122,375.

  • Jeff Hickling, Senior VP, up to $1,850,625.

  • David Mills, President Europe, up to 906,114 pound sterling.

According to Gartner, Ricoh sold 16.5% of all copiers sold in the U.S. last year, while Canon sold 10.3%.

Xerox announced that it is the official office equipment provider for both political party conventions in the U.S.

The Wabash County board is reviewing a decision to spend $9000 of a Homeland Security Department grant to buy a used color copier for the Wabash County Health Department. According the spokesperson, Lester Templin, the cost per copy for color will be 65 cents

InfoTrends estimates that there are 1.7 million color pages printed via TransPromo applications, and will grow 22.8 billion. TransPromo, or transactional promotion documents, usually comprise a full color marketing message on an invoice or statement mailing to customers, printed on a production print color system.

Lexmark announced free software which is claims will reduce the amount of printing in the workplace:

A free toolbar for either Microsoft Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox browerso one click to convert full color web page into black and whiteo automatically eliminate logos and graphics.

History of DANKA trivia ;

  • DANKA sells South and Central American business to Toshibao 2006.

  • DANKA sells its European business to Ricoh for $210 milliono 2008, sells to Konica Minolta for $240 million.

Silverbrook Research announces a delay in launching its revolutionary color inkjet technology. The company, which had previously announced that its MEMJET technology would rival that of laser printers, is now hoping to launch a product by end of 2009. It had originally announced it plans to launch a desktop photo printer, but due to image quality issues, it will now focus on a desktop A4 model. It will print letter-size only, have top speed of 60ppm, and sell for $399. Unknown which consumer electronics vendor will actually market it. While the technology was invented by Kia Silverbrook, the launch will be coordinated by Bill McGlynn, a former Hewlett Packard executive.

A website named fixyourownprinter.com is detailing ways to get more life out of toner cartridges made by Hewlett Packard and Brother.
