Eric the "Office Worker" Gets a Supra Wide Format!

Eric the "Office Worker" recently changed jobs due to the economic slowdown and is now working for BetaAlpha which is a large custom power supply manufacturer located in Patterson, NJ.

Eric's job description? Well he pretty much does it all around the office, he's to the "go to guy" for making copies of wide format prints, scanning and archiving of existing wide format drawings.

For the last few months Eric had been charged with the task of scanning all of the engineering drawings that had been printed from the BetaAlpha's new wide format color plotters. At first, Eric asked his Manager, "why the heck do we have to scan these when you have the document in a digital format". Eric's boss replied, "Hey we don't pay you to think, just scan these and archive them in the system". With a gruummph, Eric shrugged his shoulders and off he went to the Xerox wide format system to scan, scan and scan some more.

Well, here's a few things Eric didn't understand, the prints from the plotter were in color and once they were printed they had to be sent to the Engineering Manager for approval. His approval meant that he had to sign and date every drawing that was printed. Thus, everything that was printed and approved had to be scanned.

When scanning Eric was amazing with the system, he was able to scan, scan and archive, all was well in Eric's world. Scanning was so simple, Eric had all of the scan attributes set up for one button. With that one touch of the button the document would be turned into a pdf and sent off to the correct folder on the network.

A few weeks later, Eric was asked to re-print a batch of drawings that had been scanned a few weeks before. Oh, Eric thought no problemo, within 20 or 30 minutes Eric returned with all of the printed scans. Eric's manager flipped through the drawings and noticed that all of that all of the lines on the drawing were black, hmmmph he thought, this is not the way they were printed.

The Engineers at AlphaBeta printed in color because they had different colors that represented different voltages. Eric's manager also noted that the signature and date line were barely visible. Now for the last three months, Eric had scanned thousands of drawings, plus he had scanned them the only way he knew how. How the heck did he know that the Xerox would not scan in color and that's what the engineering department needed.

Eric's manager was now fuming, he knew it wasn't Eric's fault and off to purchasing with Eric in tow. Eric's Managed explained the situation and stated "we need color scanning, and while we're at it, make sure you get one that's able to make color copies too!"

Remember Eric right? Well Eric appeared in a few of our blogs in the past and is also an avid reader of the P4PHotel. Eric suggested to the purchasing agent that they get a SUPRA. The purchasing managed looked at Eric and then his manager and said "get this guy outta here".

No, wait, Eric exclaimed!!! Now, just as quick as Ralphie in a "Christmas Story" blurted out "I want an Official Red Ryder Carbine-Action Two-Hundred-Shot Range Model Air Rifle!", Eric shouted this to the purchasing manager "The EIS Supra combines Best-of-Breed technology from Graphtec, Canon and Paradigm Imaging to produce a state of art solution for FM’s, CAD/GIS and Reprographics. Manage, and electronically distribute wide format documents for technical and graphic arts solutions with our array of EIS wide format copiers, scanners, printers and document imaging workflow software. The EIS Supra large format scan, copy and print solution provides maximum flexibility to meet your needs at an affordable price." Whoa, Eric was gassed after that!

The purchasing manager looked at Eric's Boss, stated, "Ok, get me the information on the Supra, and I'll get your department one right away and get this guy his Red Ryder!"

End result, another color wide format sale for a dealer that sold Paradigm Imagings Supra Color Wide Format Mulitfunctional system that prints, scans and copies in color!!

EIS Quatra Color Wide Format MFP Saves the Day!

Another repost for ya, btw the way we're killin it with sales, now we have to keep it rolling!!
I just finished my first install on the EIS Quatra "M" series from Paradigm Imaging. This is an awesome unit! The ease of set-up and install is exceptional along with the configuration of scan, print and copy drivers!

First, we had the unit dropped shipped to the customers location, this was a great savings since the shipment did not have to come to our office first and then ship to the customer. Second, we had the unit up and running inside of one hour! There were no issues with software, hardware or print drivers (whew)! Third, the software was easy to use and was very user friendly, we took about and hour to train the customer on all of the features they needed to use. Very cool software!

For those of you not aware of the EIS Quatra "M" series, Paradigm Imaging has combined a Graphtec 36" color scanner (24 bit) with Graphtec 24" color printer and their awesome Rocket controller and Image Flow software. Customers can scan scan wide format in color or monochrome, print in color or monochrome and copy in color or monochrome, all for under $9,000! We were also able to batch print, scan and copy.

Clients looking for a wide format color scanner (24bit) can expect to see prices upwards of $14,000 for a 36" wide system. The Quatra fills the void for the price conscious buyer that still needs high end productivity and solution work flow software. If you are player in the wide format arena, I highly suggest that you get on board with these systems!

imagePRO Ci40 HD Scanner Review "Paradigm Imaging"

Every now and then, a company will introduce a new piece of hardware that will break price a price barrier that was the norm for many years. I had the chance to see and test this unit at the AIIM/Ondemand Show in Phili, trust me this is one sweet scanner, plus it's eco-friendly and economical. Utilizing a new dual LED light system for optimum illumination, it uses less power than traditional fluorescent scanners.
The imagePRO (cool name also) Ci40HD boasts a new paper transport system, allowing for better media handling and more accurate scanning.
Paradigm Imaging Group (the largest distributor of wide format scan-print-and-copy systems in North America) introduced the imagePRO Ci40 large format scanner at AIIM/On Demand in Philadelphia.
The buzz around the show was THAT INCREDIBLE street price on a 40” scanner (imagePRO Ci40 HD m model). At $5364, it’s the lowest price ever seen for a black & white large-format scanner (This is an introductory promo).
In addition to AIIM/On Demand, Paradigm and the imagePRO Ci40 will be in attendance at the IRgA Convention April 29-May 1 in Pittsburgh (booth 502). Paradigm is also launching a media blitz with full page ads in the May issues of Imagesource and Wide Format Imaging and an email campaign to over 1 MILLION email addresses in the Architectural, Construction, Copy, IT, Manufacturing and Printing markets.
imagePRO Ci40HD Stats:
· 600 dpi true optical resolution and 9600 maximum resolution
· 48-bit color and 16-bit monochrome data capture
· Fast 3.3 ips color and 10 ips monochrome scan speeds
· Instant productivity from power-on – no warm-up, no waiting
· New Advanced Single Roller Paper Transport – Superior Paper Handling - Front Media Return Workflow
· One year on-site warranty with an optional two-year warranty upgrade

Copier Sales "Lock Out The Competition"

We all look for the lock out features of a third party solution or a hardware feature that will enable us to get the sale. However, did you know that you can also have a certain product or certain line that will lock your competitors out?

Guess what? You can have that with wide format products from Paradigm Imaging. I'll give you a quick story of a recent sale that I had.

The time came to upgrade one of my larger accounts in New Jersey, they had eight MFP's plus a wide format MFP all from Ricoh. I took the time to visit every department and review their needs for new hardware and also to see if anything had changed from three years ago. Most of the departments were ok, except for the Engineering Department, this department had a Ricoh 240W MFP. When speaking with the department head, I uncovered the need for wide format color scanning and printing. Now, if you're familiar with Ricoh wide format products, well to say the least we have nothing to offer that copy, scan and print in color!

So, what to do........, we are a dealer with Paradigm Imaging. Paradigm Imaging has three wide format color MFP's that will allow for color scanning, printing and copying. Alright so far so good, now I need to check the meter on the Ricoh 240W just to make sure the the Paradigm Supra would fit the bill for volume and speed. Checking the meter on the 240W, I found that it produced 9,000 LF in three years, now that's low volume for this unit, one more thing to check let me go back to the head of Engineering and see if printing at 2 "d" (monochrome)size per minute will work. I did, and speed was not a concern, color scanning was the main issue with the need to print color wide format. Ok, time to make a long story short.

Since we had the relationship with Paradigm Imaging and the Engineering Department needed Color wide format scanning, printing and copying, we were able to produce a quote that met their needs. I truly felt that if we didn't have the Paradigm machines Engineering would have made some calls to get pricing for something we could not offer. If they had done that, the doors would have opened up and their would have been multiple proposals from other sources. The end result is we were able to secure an Eighty Five Thousand Dollar order by having a unique color wide format MFP.

If you're a dealer where you have heavy direct channel pressure, the Paradigm line is great to have in your back pocket. Check them out they have excellent support and wide range of wide format products!

One more thing check out the new Ci40, the most afforadble scanner on the market fir CAD and technical drawings!

On Demand Show in Phili 2009

I'm was thrilled that On Demand/AIIM show is back in Phili! It's always a pleasure to be in Phili in the spring.

I would have to concur with others that the show was much smaller than previous years, and I'm also thinking that attendance was down, way down. Of course the larger manufacturers had some decent traffic, however once you went around to the smaller vendors all I heard was how horrendous the traffic was. In years past, when traveling with colleagues I would lose site of them for hours at a time and would have to call them on the cell in order to find them. Not this time, aisles were free to walk about and you could see from one end to the other without the obstruction of people. A few vendors stated that the first and second day in the AM had some traffic however by the time the afternoon rolled around the turnout was sparse.

Here's some of the players in Print Production that were missing from the show; Kodak (Geez, why were they not there and especially when everyone had to wear Kodak lanyards??), Ricoh (They release the C900 and they don't show with their PPBG Group of high end production units), IKON (I had heard that Ricoh would not be there but assumed that they would send IKON for the Print Production, I guessed wrong), Sharp (Again another comapany trying to get back in the game with some good segment 6 and they missed the boat also).

Like always there was tremendous action at Canon, and Xerox. Konica Minolta and OCE seemed to have a lot of action also. InfoPrint/Ricoh was there with their version of the C900, however it was they made sure that everyone new they were InfoPrint/Ricoh.

Unlike years in past the HP booth was a challenge to navigate, however not alot of action there. Everywhere you looked were high production color units for over $100K, I was shocked when I was told the MRSP of the new KonicaMinolta Pro65hc was around $120k with accessories for a 60ppm color device!

Here's a list of what I'll be bloggin about in the next few days:

KonicaMinolta Pro65hc
Paradigm Imagings C140 imagePRO
OCE CS 130T & CS665
Canon C1+
Panasonic DPM 210 (A4 device)
KonicaMinolta KM652
LamaFilm

I did have the chance to see one of my accounts at the show and he purchased at the show at Xante Illumina Envelope Press. This is really and OkiC9800 printer with an envelope feeder and conveyor exit area. I think he paid $14,995 "show special", he also told me he was very happy with how the machine ran at the show.

Scanner "Tech Tips"

Special thanx to Paradigm Imaging for this content. If you're not familiar with Paradigm, Imaging they are a distributor of Wide Format products. In the last two months we purchased two wide format MFP Supra's. If you're looking for another product and or solution, I suggest you turn to Paradigm Imaging.

Understanding Scanner Technologies
CCD vs CIS

When purchasing a scanner, there are basically two choices with regards to technology – CIS (Contact Image Sensor) or CCD (Charged Couple Device). A scanner consists of a light source, one or more image sensors and a lens system. This
is true for both CIS and CCD scanning technologies. Contact image sensors (CIS) are in near contact with the image while scanning the document. The CCD (charged
couple device) requires a much longer focus distance, usually obtained through folded optics directing the light path through a series of mirrors.

CCD method
(optical reduction method)

Light from the light source is reflected by the document's surface. This light is
reflected further by a mirror, directed through a lens, and received by the CCD. Since the CCD reads light reduced by the lens, this method is called the “optical reduction method”.

CIS method
(contact image sensor method)

The light from the three RGB color LEDs used as light source are reflected by the document. This reflected light is received in turn by the CIS sensor, which performs the actual scanning. The LEDs, lens, and sensor are integrated into a single module. Since these components are all rods of the same length in close contact, this
method is called the “contact image sensor” method

Which to choose? It depends on what you are scanning, and how much scanning you are doing. Generally, a CIS scanner is considered to be better for technical documents (CAD, AEC, GIS, Maps, Government, and Utilities) because it is able to reproduce
fine lines, small type and minute details. It is also most likely the preferred solution for high-volume scanning as it provides higher
throughput, and requires no warm-up time.

A CCD scanner is often used in the graphic arts arena to scan photographs, renderings, posters, and other items with the need for high/true color reproduction. CCD scanners generally are available in larger sizes, including flatbed scanners that are often used to scan fine art.

best fit for your situation, contact Paradigm Imaging Group at

Riding the Wave of Wide Format Color Copiers!

Are you riding the wave or still looking for your surf or boogie board? As the demand for scanning (color & monochrome) is at an all time high in the general office, the demand for color scanning is also gaining popularity in the AEC (Architectural, Engineering and Construction).

Recently, a few accounts have asked me for color wide format scanners to complement their existing wide format technology.

We have the a full line of scanners available through Paradigm Imaging, so in search of a solution one day I paid a visit Paradigm Imagings web site and to review all of their wide format scanners. I was in search of a color scanner, with a 36" throat (this would be the widest document that you could insert for scanning). What I found was amazing, a good quality color scanner could retail anywhere from $12,000 to $17,000! Plus, the margins were ok at best.

Now, I've been working with Paradigm Imaging for awhile and never really saw the value of their new EIS models. To tell you the truth, I saw, I read but didn't comprehend the value of these systems! Let me tell you this, if you are selling in the AEC market place and you have not checked out the EIS models (Multifunctional Wide Format), then you're missing the wave for increased sales and solutions!

Paradigm has about 12 different EIS configurations, the one that impressed me most is the Quatra series. The Quartra series is available in three different configurations, the M, C & E.

The one that I needed is the "C" series which includes a 36" color scanner, a 24" wide format ink printer and a Rockect PC Controller. Once installed the customer can color scan, color copy, scan2print or print and this is all controlled from the touch screen UI (User Interface) that comes with the Rocket Controller. BEST OF ALL, the MSRP is only $8,995. Now you can probably guess where I'm going with this.

We now have the ability to add value to our existing wide format placements, make the calls, there is a need for wide format color scanning, & copying. If you've hit a wall with your existing monochrome devices, along with many new players now selling wide format. You now have a real story to tell and solution to sell to your existing wide format accounts. Typically wide format copies can sell for as much as $3.00 per square foot and color wide format scans can be as high as $20 per scan. So, how many square feet or wide format scans do it take to justify one of these? I have done the math, with wide format color scanning, it only takes 9 scans to justify a Quatra, and this may be the easiest path to follow when conducting the ROI.

Go ride the wave, this is really what we needed!!!!
