3D printers are hot, and they got even hotter after President Obama made mention of them in his State of the Union address this year. My google alerts now carries at least 10-15 mentions of 3D printers each week, before the State of the Union address, maybe 5 or 6 per week.
Since you have or may be thinking about getting that 3D printer, could we possible see 3D MFP's (multifunctional device) that will scan 3D and copy 3D items in the near future?
Think about it, if I'm a novice user with a 3D printer and I'm really not good with engineering software or I'm tired of the template files that came with my 3D printer, why the heck would I want one? Where I see the value at least for me, is the ability to place and item on the 3D MFP and then make copies of them. Think of it, you could make a copy of just about anything, whether it's a small part, a sculpture, nick knacks, flower pots, or whatever the heart desires. I'll admit I'm knew to the entire process of 3D printing, however if we had a 3D MFP would we'd be able to scan an item and then have that data transformed into a CAD or some type of engineering file. Better yet, what about sending a copy of that item to another 3D printer that could be located anywhere in the world. Could there be a 3D printer portable image format that's just dedicated to 3D MFP's for copying and scanning? Would I be able to them email that to someone else?
Maybe 3D MFP's could be the first replicators that were used in Star Trek in the seventies. I'm thinking there is a place for 3D MFP's in the very near future. Would it be far fetched that we could scan out favorite pet and keep the likeness of them around forever? Could we see color 3D MFP's in the near future? The possibilities can become endless, but could also open up new businesses opportunities for those creative entrepreneurs.
Why haven't we seen any of the major copier manufacturers enter the industry? It's a no brainer to me, closed consumables, service contracts, on site service and training it's all there. 3D printers would be a great additional to your dealerships portfolio of products and services offered also!
3D printers, 3D MFP's (maybe), but for right now it seems like it's the Wild, Wild West about this for this growing industry.

Copier Stream of Payments Calculator

After years of making a mistake every now and then I moved to calculating the remaining payments in my pricing worksheet (which is a document that can be downloaded on the Print 4Pay Hotel forums). All was well and good, but I was still having issues with the start date, today's date, when we delivered new equipment. Plain and simple is was a cluster$%^#.
The other day, I decided to do something about it. I developed my own "Copier Stream of Payments Calculator. All you need to do is input the start date, today's date and the amount of the monthly payment and the rest if the information is calculated for you with the remaining number of payments, and the total for the remaining stream of payments and return fees.
Usually this file is reserved for Premium Print4Pay Hotel members, however if you register here and include a note in the BIO field stating "send me the Copier Stream of Payments Calculator", I will email that to you for free. I showed it to a few reps already and all have stated it's a real time saver and awesome to use in the field.

Sharp "What Will Happen" Part Two
On the Print4Pay Hotel forums we've had an ongoing poll titled "Sharp What Will Happen". We posed this question to our members:
Pretty cut and dry, do you think they will sell the MFP division to stay afloat?
The end of the fiscal year for Sharp Japan is right around the corner, sometime in the next few weeks we'll see the earnings potential for Sharp.
Some Print4Pay Hotel members have speculated that if a deal is going to cut with Samsung for the copier division that it may happen before the end of the 2012 fiscal year which is March 31st, 2013.
In the last week Sharp had missed the deadline to receive the additional monies from Qualcom, I find it amazing that for months all we new about this deal is that Qualcom had bought a 2.65 percent stake in Sharp. Not until last week did we find out that Sharp had missed a March 29th deadline to complete a plan to begin fabricating power-saving screens. Thus Sharp missed out on the final $60 million payment. I'm thinking that was pretty painful. In a recent bit of news it was reported that Sharp will now receive the other $60 million some time in late June of 2013.
Seems most of us were not aware of this T & C with Qualcom and Sharp, and I'm now wondering if there were also some other T & C's that were built into the Samsung buy in also?
So much for the recent updates with Sharp:
Here's how are Print4Pay Hotel members voted:
59% voted YES "That Sharp will sell the MFP Division"
41% voted No
In politics some would argue that 59% - 41% is a landslide. Stay tuned I'm sure we'll here much more in the coming weeks. BTW if you'd like to cast your vote please follow this link if you're a Print4Pay Hotel member VOTE HERE and if you're not a member then Register Here (It's Free) and then place your vote.

Sharp "Reading Between the Lines" Part 2
Sharp Update!!
Intel may take a 30 billion yen investment in Sharp by the end of the month, the 30 billion yen is less than 10% of what Sharp expects to lose this year.
There was also a report that Qualcom may also do something in the near future.
In another report Ming the Merciless aka Terry Guo is providing a personal guarantee for HonHai to move forward with the purchase of Sharp's 10th gen LCD plant. It's reported for about 19 billion yen. Keep in mind that Sharp is expected to lose 450 billion yen this year. Thus that's 5.6 billion US dollars!
Money from Intel and Hon Hai is only 49 billion yen. That's a mere 10% of the expected losses for this year.
Another report states that Sharp will raise production at it's Kameyama No. 2 plant to near 100%, this plant produces the IGZO screens for Apple's Ipad tablet.
Sharp is banking on IGZO as the revival of it's fortunes.
The Sharp debacle has now many months under it's legs since a Nikkei Analyst stated that "Sharp May Sell it's Copier Business" .
There are those of us in the copier industry that believe that the rhetoric from Sharp USA is correct and others that believe that the silence from Sharp Corp JP may tell the true story. I try to read every press release to try and make sense of what Sharp Corp will do with their copier business unit. On one hand I believe it is a valuable resource to them, however on the other hand I see how deep they are with the likes of Apple, and their IGZO displays. Those of us in the industry know that the herd of copier manufacturers needs to be culled, the industry as a whole will be stronger if Sharp decides to get out of the copier/mfp business.
I think Sharp needs to pull the plug and get out while the getting is good, page volumes don't look good for the future, while screens for tablets, mini tablets, and phones will continue to expand. So, why why hold on to a business unit that may wither away in the near future. The likes of Kyocera, and Toshiba are probably chomping at the bit to swallow the existing Sharp dealers, Sharp direct and their base.
What would you do if you were Sharp Corp?

Dealer Event of the East for October 2nd & 3rd & AL East Pennant Race
Back in the grand old days of the copier industry, there were no dealer events and shows.
Once every year a National Office Equipment Show would be held in the US, every other year the show rotated from an eas to west venue, Back in the day the show was called NOMDA (National Office Machine Dealer Association). I had the chance to only go to one NOMDA show that was held in Atlanta in the early nineties and it was an awesome experience. Every copier manufacturer was showing their latest and greatest in copiers, fax machines and duplicators. The after hour parties were also exceptional. I can remember crashing a Ricoh party one night were the theme was to something to do with the Wizard of OZ. Years ago when sellling copiers when someone told me that they were considering a Ricoh my favorite response was "whats a Ricoh"? My times do change right?
Time changes everything and NOMDA is now known as BTA (Business Technology Association), BTA is the trade organization for Office Equipment Dealers. BTA has a long laundry list of exceptional services that are available to the Office Equipment Dealers such as legal services, advocating for the dealer channel (this would include many new laws that may be coming to states for hard drive data destruction and deletion), monthly webinars, education and a BTA Market Place. The Print4Pay Hotel is now a BTA member and I'm excited about having access to additional information that can help me grow a bigger and better Print4Pay Hotel. I've only scratched the surface of the BTA offerings, I recommend you go here and take a tour of their web site and become a BTA member.
With many manufacturers now offering their own dealer shows, the National type show has not been around for sometime, however BTA does a really awesome job of presenting District BTA shows and events. One such District event is schedule for October (2012) the 2nd and 3rd in Rye, NY. This event will open at 3:30 PM on the October 2nd with a keynote by Norihiko Ina, President and CEO of Kyocera Document Solutions (I'm going to ask him if they purchased the Sharp MFP division, hehe). A welcome reception will follow at 5:30PM where attendees will get a chance to network and visit exhibiting sponsors (more than 30). October 3rd will see breakfast from 7AM-8AM, followed by opening comments and three education sessions. Lunch and then another 2 education sessions and then closing comments.
The BTA event is unique in that all of the events, seminars and exhibiting sponsors are all in the same room. Exhibitors will also have door prizes and you'll need to be present to win, this creates an extremely fun atmosphere at the end of the show. After the show about 5:30PM buses will leave for Yankee Stadium where attendees will be able to take in one of the last ball games of the regular season and by all accounts it could be an awesome experience with the pennant race being so close! If you're interested in signing up, click here.
As we all know, we can never stop learning, knowledge is the key to driving profit and building your business, BTA provides an important service that will help dealers build their business while keeping dealers up to date with the latest trends and market information. I will be at the show, I'll do some live tweeting, some blogging and an excited to be a part of the BTA experience. If you're a Print4Pay Hotel Member or a reader of the mfpsolutions blog please make sure you say hello. I'll be looking forward to shooting the breeze with everyone!

MFP Wars "The Final 5 Prophecy" Sharp is...
A couple of years ago I posted a few blogs in reference to what copier/mfp manufacturers would make up the "The Final Five". There were many comments made when I left Sharp Corporation out of "The Final Five". My guess is the people commenting were die hard Sharp enthusiasts and that's not a bad thing.
Back in the mid to late eighties, Sharp ruled the copier industry! It seemed like I was always up against a sharp copier when I was competing for new business. In the eighties Ikon (Alco) was buying up Sharp dealerships left and right. Many dealer owners walked away with pockets full of cash.
However, in the copier business no manufacturer ever stays on top for more than a few years. Thus in the nineties the beginning of the end for Sharp came one day as Ikon dropped Sharp from their portfolio in lieu of Canon and Ricoh. Since that time Sharp has been playing catch up trying to regain double digit market share in the US.
In recent weeks, many Internet sources revealed that Sharp Corporation was in dire straits and they had limited cash reserves. Today, saw a report from Reuters that Sharp Corporation is looking to sell the copier division in order to raise much needed cash. The report went on to state that Kyocera was interested in some type of acquisition.

Selling Copiers & MFP's "Where's the Hard Drives?"
Almost 30 years ago, Clara Peller screamed "Where's the Beef?" to American and Canadian TV viewers. "Where's the Beef?" was a popular slogan in the Eighties to lure hamburger eaters from the likes of McDonald's and Burger King over to Wendy's.
In recent weeks, Copier Dealers have been asking "Where's the Hard Drives?". Severe flooding in Thailand has affected shipments of MFP's to the US. The flooding from October 23rd left many hard drive factories under water.
Pictures that were posted on the Print4Pay Hotel forums showed massive flooding in several industrial parks. Just about three weeks after the flooding almost 1,000 Hitachi HDD workers went on strike and further disrupting the supply chain.
Later in the month of December came the announcements from many Copier and Printer Manufacturers that there would be disruptions to the supply chain. There were some reports of disruptions that may last 3 - 6 months. In a recent post on the Print4Pay forums a Hitachi VP claimed that it will take almost a year for the Global Hard Drive industry to recover from the impact of the flooding.
"Where's the Hard Drives?", seems that 4 hard drive manufacturers have 90% of the market, Western Digital, Seagate, Hitatchi and Toshiba. Almost thirty three percent of all hard drives are manufactured in Thailand. Read more here
When I first heard about the floods in Thailand, I really didn't think there would be that much of an issue with MFP's in the US. Goes to show you how much I know. In recent weeks, I've been alerted to the back order of MFP's due to the flooding. Again, I thought no big deal a few extra days here and there and it won't be a big thing. The lasted is that we have four or five MFP models that are projected with 3-6 month back orders, one particular model had a June back order. Dam, I had just sold 5 of these to one of my accounts! "Where's the Hard Drives?" Now, I'm hearing from other reps from other manufacturers that they're now seeing additional MFP's models placed on longer than usual back orders.
Even though Thailand manufacturers almost one third of the worlds hard drives it might be a good bet that they supplied at least or more than 50% of the hard drives to Copier manufacturers (this is just a guess) and that's the reason for the shortages. Least we forget about the earthquake and tsunami in Japan last year and it seems we've had a perfect storm to really wreak havoc with the Copier Industry.
What good is a digital copier without a hard drive, it's like having a hamburger without the meat, it just doesn't work! Which leads me to this short story, many years ago, we had a local Jack in the Box (just like a Wendy's MickyD's or BurgerKing), however you had to drive up, place your order with a giantic clown head. One night in particular, I placed my order, got my burgers and to my surprise all I got was the *&($#(* bun!

Xerox FREE High Volume Copiers
This is an ongoing topic on the Print4Pay Hotel forums. I thought I would share some of the threads that were posted by Print4Pay Hotel members.
Me: Dig this. I followed up today with a small print shop here in NJ today, towards the month end for me and this print shop had been in the market for a color printer, however my price was not right for him a few months ago.
Anyway, I'm on the phone with him (he's a good guy and wouldn't bs me), he tells me that he signed and agreement from Xerox for a refurbished 120ppm digital copier and a 25ppm color system with NO Base charges and NO minimums for monthly click charges, along with that he stated the cost per page charge is right in line with new systems!
He has to keep the machine for a minimum of 3 years and if he decides to get rid of the system there is a $500 charge to remove.
To say the least I was shocked and to tell the truth the customer is too! He said he checked the paperwork and all looked well, I asked that he check it again and read all of the fine print because this just seems to good to be true. In addition he stated that one of his other printer buddies did the same deal in NJ. He also stated that he has to wait 4-8 weeks to get the systems.
Has anyone else seen or heard of this in other parts of the country????
Reply from Printfun:
This is legit. It is only open to current non-users. It is as advertised, there really aren't any "catches". The goal is to introduce non-users to Xerox production color machines, allowing smaller print for pay customers to get into the game afford ably.
Reply from Chuck:
Think about it - Xerox places a NEW device in a P4P or School location and picks up perfectly good (these are NOT fast plastic as they call 'em) 120 ppm device and rather than warehouse them they're placed in a NET NEW location generating half the revenue they were getting AND they've got a NET NEW color printer. It's all about the clicks and the aftermarket. In three years (or perhaps much sooner) there's another "great offer" and . . .
This topic has topped a couple of hundred page views over the last week and there are an additional 9 threads from other Print4Pay Hotel members.

KIP 700M is the Bees Knees!
The phrase "the bee's knees", meaning "the height of excellence", became popular in the U.S. in the 1920s. So, I'm rolling back to the roaring 20's to tout the new KIP700M Digital Wide Fomat System. With an MSRP of $13,595 which includes color scanning, printing and copying at 3"D" Size image per minute could also be called the 'the cat's pyjamas".
Here's some specs:
LED printer with KIP HDP Plus Technology
600 x 600 dpi
100%. No waste
1 roll, Media Bypass, Cut sheet feeder (20 pages - from A2 to A4) (option)
Bond, Vellum, Tranlucent Bond, Film
(W)1245mm x (D) 680mm x (H) 611mm (stand excl.)
Ethernet 10/100 Mbits/s, USB 2.0
AutoCAD 2004 and up
Contact Image Sensor (CIS)
HPGL, HPGL/2, HP-RTL, TIFF, CALS type 1, ED MICS (C4), DWF, CalComp 906/907/951, Adobe ®, PostScript/PDF (optional)
From everything I've found on the internet and a few posts from Print4Pay Hotel Members, it seems the KIP 700M will be a BIG DEAL! With a list price of $13,595, and all indications that it will include color scan, copy, and print, the KIP 700M is a great value.
Here's a few threads I found on the web:
"I like that it has a cut sheet, you can load that up with 18" x 24" or 17" x 22" and put a 36" or 34" roll in the printer and print C, D and E size prints." http://www.keepitprinting.com/
"A USB PORT to allow printing and saving documents scanned via the USB stick"
"Possibility to integrate a MULTIPLE CUT SHEET FEEDER (20 paper sheets from A4 to A2)"
"A COLOR TOUCH SCREEN USER INTERFACE in front"
Now, I have not seen all of the specs for this device yet. I'm thinking .pdf printing and scanning might be an option, not sure if it will scan2folder or scan2email, plus I'm not even sure of the controller speed, memory or hard drive size. But at the price point of $13,595, this should be an attractive solution for many low volume users in the AEC market to save money and just may produce additional sales from AEC users who have older inkjet plotters. There are many AEC users that wanted to add copying and color scanning but they could never justify the cost of the current devices on the market.
I'm extremely excited to see this device come to market and I'm convinced the likes of OCE, Xerox and Ricoh will have to follow. A Print4Pay Hotel Member posted a thread on the boards stating that KonicaMinolta will also be marketing this device.
