Selling Copiers & MFp's "Tell em it's God Calling"

I tell ya, when you get down to the last few days of the month and you're sitting on 105K that can close, anything can happen.

While I was taking a break from making some follow up calls, and I had just made a boat load of them (all of this was before the earthquake).  I overheard one of the reps state his name and our company on the phone.

Well, I knew what the question was "Who is calling"?

After he got off the phone I stated the next time I'm gonna tell someone it's GOD calling and see what happens (of course I was just kidding).

However here's few things that will irrate GOD!

  • Don't leave God on hold forever
  • Don't have a nasty attitude towards GOD
  • Don't hate GOD for calling
  • Don't put GOD into voice mail (ever)
  • Don't tell GOD he or she is away from their desk
  • Don't tell GOD we're not interested
  • Don't tell GOD we just leased a machine a week ago (that irrates GOD more than ever, it's like "you shoulda been here yesterday the fish were all over the place)
  • Don't ask GOD what are you calling in reference to
  • Don't tell GOD not to call again
  • Don't tell GOD that person isout to lunch at 3PM in the afternoon
  • Don't tell GOD he or she just stepped out
  • Don't tell GOD he or she is busy
  • Last but not least DON'T EVER HANG UP ON GOD!
So, the next time you've had a busy day on the phone, maybe you can use the GOD card, I'm sure it will either get a laugh or someone will hang up on GOD!

Selling Copiers & MFP's "How to be Successful"

What does it take to be among the elite sales people at your branch or your dealership?

For starters you've got to have a passion for being number 1.  Nothing floats my boat more than being at the top of the totem poll each and every month. I like to win, don't like to lose and will do the extra work to make sure my numbers are the best they can be month in and month out.

I've spoken about the 3D's of selling before and they are Desire, Dedication and Determination.  Too often I see reps that will slack off once they've hit their number. The phone calls, the appointments and the opportunities drop. On the other hand I also understand why this can happen, our business unlike any other is filled with rejection, riddled with price driven customers and reps, along with countless hours of research that can lead to failure.

To be the best you've got to WANT IT!  Why would you be in sales if you didn't want to be at the top of the ladder each month, each quarter and year end?

For me, I pick out a goal each year, this years goal is to be number one, not only in percentage of quota but overall sales volume (it's gonna be a dog race to the finish).  I'll admit, I'm driven and once I set my mind on something I'll try my hardest to achieve that goal.  Along with claiming the goal,  everything else seems to fall in place like the commissions, the spiffs, the placements and additional knowledge of the competition. It's a never ending learning cycle and what I like best about sales is that as long as you put the work and effort in, you never know what the next day is going to bring!

So, I've got these three targets that I try to hit every month, I know that as long as I hit these targets I'm going to be Number 1.

I'm going to re post this blog on the P4P Hotel forums with those three targets that helps me be number 1 each and every month.  Feel free to log on and become a member of the largest group of Copier (Imaging) Professionals in the world!

Selling Copiers "When is a New Account Not a New Account"

Tis the question!

It's been bugging me for a while and just thought I'd throw it out there for the masses.  How does you company clarify what is new account and what's not?

Here's some emails that I've received from other reps over the last few months.

"Our company sold them some hardware about 8 years ago, after the 36 month lease expired we lost the business and the account went elsewhere.  I was just able to place a small MFP in the account again (hopefully bigger things will come of it), however my company stated that this was not a new account, since they were on the books EIGHT years ago!!    Why is that?"  Lansing, Michigan

"I'm closing to getting the deal for Print Production System for this account, years ago they had a wide format system from us.  They moved, did not have the need for wide format anymore, after the lease they returned the equipment.  Today they have Xerox Production Color and a Canon Production System.  We have no clicks in this account and no traction with Print Production.  Why is this not a NEW account" Boca Raton, Florida

"Dam..........we've got this account that has 28 printers from us and NO copiers/MFP's.  They had 45 copiers from Kyocera until I upgraded them.  I went back to the office with order in hand and was ecstatic that I had pulled in a new account, to me it was a new account because they did not have one copier/MFP from us before.  WTF, why does this not count"   Boston, Mass

I'm in the field just like everyone else.  I understand that NEW business is the way to grow the business.  Going around upgrading existing accounts is not the way to GROW the business.  But, in the cases mentioned above, THEY ARE ALL NEW BUSINESS well at least they are to me!

So, the salesperson in Boston generated 45 new placements of copiers, but just because they had traction with printers it doesn't count for new business?  What about the wide format in Boca, dam it was gone years ago and this company had to no traction in Print Production.

New business should mean we've generated additional revenue that we did not have from an existing account, hey you put us on the map in that account and that was a great job.  Of course new business is also a place where you have never had a placement of hardware.  Many years ago I was refused a new account status because the customer was getting service from us however they never purchased copiers until  I sold them one, and then there was another where the company was buying toner cartridges for their laser printer.  Yup, I sold em a big fancy color system and it didn't count.

Sales are what you make of it.....sometimes the BS needs to stop and each account should be reviewed on a case by case basis.  Did we expand out exposure, did we gain additional placements, what did we have before.  Just because you never did business with them before is the not the only reason the account should be classified as NEW!

MFP Solutions to the Table and Hardware will Follow!

I've had a few emails in recent weeks to try and get some threads in reference to solutions. There certainly are enough of them out there.

Just today I had an appointment with an IT Manager in New Jersey, company size is about 40 and they have numerous print, copy and fax devices.

The first thing I did was to ask for a tour of the facility. Once I had the ok, I fumbled for the pen and paper and we went to see all of the devices.

This is probably the best way to start any appointment when you're engaging with a new client, so much can be learned from seeing how the machines are placed, where they are placed, how they are used and what type of media is being used. You really can get a firm grip on how they use their machines.

When we arrived at one of the MFP's, I questioned the IT person if they are scanning the documents as search able pdf's. The answer I got was, "well we had looked at document management...", I then replied "was it the expense why you didn't move forward?", the IT Manager agreed and then stated the cost was $20K to get started. With that I brought up NSI Autostore explaining that that you can get NSI for around $1,200 or so and at least start converting all of your scanned images to search able .pdfs.

Top Ten Favorite Copier Moments!

We started this topic on the Print4Pay Hotel forums a few months ago and I thought I'd share some of the threads that were posted for everyone.

Check out the YouTube video on the left it's pretty good also!

If you'd like to add your own go to this link and register to be a member, don't worry it's FREE!

"Several years back, I installed a fleet of Gestetner 60ppm MFP's in a large private school in DFW. The day after they were installed, a teacher decided to make transparencies (this was only 6 years ago, but they still used them) on the new machine. She made the mistake of grabbing transparencies that were not approved for use on a high-speed copier and proceeded to melt several transparencies onto the fusing unit. Not realizing what happened, she just thought the new machine was broken. So, why not try another machine down the hall. Obviously, the same result. This infuriated our VP of Service who started threatening to bill them for (2) new fusing units as part of the "User abuse" clause of their contract. The bill would've been nearly $2,000. The service technician who received the calls visited the machines and upon confirming that the transparencies had melted onto the fusing units, he abruptly left and grabbed several cans of compressed air from the Staples down the street. When he returned, he sprayed the compressed air onto the fusing units and dropped them on the floor, at which point the transparencies shattered into pieces on the floor & put the fusers back into the machines. They ran perfectly. He's basically a legend on that campus now." by TXEAGLE

"Years ago had a Lawyer come into our warehouse all angry yelling that her Fax machine we just sold her did not work at all.

So we took the fax back to product support and did some testing and could not find anything wrong with it.

After listening to her rant about documents not being sent we kindly asked her to come back to demonstrate what she was seeing as an error.

She takes a sheet of paper fed it in, dialed the test number, hit send, and started yelling

"See the paper just spits back out!"

"that piece of paper is not going anywhere!"

We had to explain to her that a Fax only transfers the image not the actual piece of paper."  by YETI

I was doing a demo when the newer bottles came out it was on a 22 cpm. Open the door and pulled the bottle and flipped it upside down and said look no more spilled toner and looked to see I was pouring toner on their new carpet. The top was still in the chuck.

The funniest one I ever heard was told to be by a technician it was in the mid 80's he dumped the developer out a customers machine and did not have a bag to put it in, so he went into the rest room and put it in the commode, but when he flushed it just spun around in the bowl. He flushed so many time the customer started knocking the door asking if he was ok and needed any help."

These quotes are pretty much "badges of honor", if you lose the deal you're not asking he customer for the copy of the are you?  Winners make things happen and yes Winners are able to get the copies of the Losers quotes.  I find these quotes to be invaluable, for example how a certain dealer, salesperson or direct branch will go about designing the proposal (and there are some really good ones), along with how poorly some will design one. Believe me, in my proposals and quotes I taken some of the really good stuff and incorporated into my own.  So you can learn from seeing other companies proposals and quotes.  Plus, there's more much when reading between the lines as to what is on the proposal and what isn't.  It's the what isn't on the proposal that tells the take of how to attack a weakness in the future.

Here's a running list of the last 50 that we've posted, you can access them on the Print4Pay Hotel forums when you become a Premium Member!  Enjoy!
